S’Archittu

An enchanting natural monument of Sardinia

S’Archittu is a coastal hamlet located in the Montiferru region, in central-western Sardinia. This magical place is known for an arch-shaped rock, sculpted by the sea and wind, which embellishes a small beach. S’Archittu is one of the 24 natural monuments established and protected by the Region of Sardinia.

The natural monument

The arch of S’Archittu is about 15 meters high and represents the remains of the roof of an ancient sea cave. Formed by sedimentary limestone rocks from the Middle Miocene, this natural monument is characterized by a unique and evocative beauty. The white limestone rock, shaped by marine and atmospheric erosion, creates a spectacular visual effect, especially at sunset when the sun seems to fit perfectly inside the arch.

History and culture

The toponym S’Archittu derives from the Logudorese and Campidanese term “arcu“, meaning “arch“. This place has been a source of inspiration for many directors and writers, often becoming a film set. Movies filmed here include “2+5 Missione Hydra” by Pietro Francisci (1966), “Notte d’estate con profilo greco, occhi a mandorla e odore di basilico” by Lina Wertmüller (1986), “The Legend of Kaspar Hauser” by Davide Manuli (2011), and “A Small Southern Enterprise” by Rocco Papaleo (2012). The most recent film shot in this area was “The Man Who Bought the Moon” by Paolo Zucca (2018).

Geography and environment

S’Archittu is located in the historical region of Montiferru, a hamlet of the municipality of Cuglieri. The locality takes its name from the natural rock arch that dominates the adjacent cove, reachable on foot via a paved path. The seabed beneath the arch reaches a depth of 9 meters, making this place ideal for lovers of diving and marine exploration.
